Changing the battery on a Wall Mounted Garage Door Remote

Wall Mounted Garage Door Remotes are a convenient & reliable way to control your garage door - but like any battery powered device, they will eventually need a battery replacement.
The good news is in most cases, its a quick & simple job you can do yourself in just a few minutes.
Wired vs Wireless Wall Mounted Remotes
First its important to know what type of wall control you have.
- Wired Units - connect directly to your garage door motor & don't have batteries
- Wireless Units - Are battery powered & will need occasional battery replacement
If your wall remote has stopped working or is becoming unresponsive, a flat battery is often the cause - provided you have a wireless model. Hardwired wall units do not use batteries, so if you have one of these, the issue is more likely related to wiring or the unit itself. In that case we recommend having it checked by a qualified electrician.
How to remove the cover
Wall mounted remotes are typically designed in one of two ways:
Screw-Fixed Covers
Some models have visible screws at the top & bottom. Simply unscrew these to remove the cover.

Clip on faceplates (most common)
Many modern remotes have a clip on front cover, similar to a light switch.
To remove it:
- Look for a small indent at the top or bottom edge
- Use a flathead screwdriver (or similar tool)
- Gently lever / unclip the cover away from the wall using these indents
Don't worry - these are designed to unclip. Just apply light pressure into the indent & outwards & it should pop off without damage.

Replacing the battery
Once the cover is removed:
- Locate the battery inside the unit
- Take note of the battery type (commonly coin batteries like CR2032)
- Remove the old battery
- Insert the new battery, ensuring the correct polarity (+/-)
- Clip or screw the cover back into place
Testing the remote
After replacing the battery:
- Press the button to test the door
- The remote should respond immediately
In most cases, no reprogramming is required - the remote will continue working as normal as a change of battery does not delete or erase a remote's programming.
When it might not be the battery
If your remote still isn't working after replacing the battery, the issue could be:
- A faulty wall unit
- Wiring issues (for wired models)
- A problem with the garage door motor
In these situations, its usually quite straightforward to narrow down the cause of the issue. If other handheld remotes are still working, this typically indicates that your wall mounted remote is faulty & will need replacing. If all remotes have stopped working, the problem is more likely with the garage door motor & contacting a service technician would be best course of action.
If you've identified that your unit is a hardwired wall control, the issue may be related to wiring & its recommended to have a qualified electrician inspect it.
