How to Identify Your Garage Door Motor Brand and Model
Need a replacement garage door remote, wireless wall button or receiver kit? Finding the right make and model is quick and simple, but before you start shopping, it’s best to identify the right brand and model you’re looking for.
A lot of remotes might look similar, but that doesn't mean they'll work with your system, so you need to make sure you’re buying something suitable for your existing setup.
The good news is that the information you need usually isn’t too hard to find.
Where to Find the Garage Door Brand
Start with Your Existing Remote
If you’ve still got your old remote, you might find the brand is printed on the remote itself, and the model is sometimes listed on the back of the remote control or inside the remote battery compartment.
The model number is usually a combination of letters and numbers, for example, a few of the most common are the Merlin E960M, ATA PTX-5V2 and Dominator ADS.
If you can find both the brand and model on your existing remote, that will usually give you the information needed to find a compatible replacement garage door remote.

Then Check the Garage Door Motor
If you can’t find the information on the remote, or you no longer have the remote, the next place to look is the garage door motor.
There are a lot of different garage door manufacturers in New Zealand, including Merlin, ATA, B&D, Dominator, Guardian, Doorworks and Chamberlain. The brand and model will usually be visible somewhere on the motor unit. If you can access it, the areas to look are:
- The front of the motor
- The side of the motor housing
- Any stickers or labels attached to the casing
- The control panel on the back of the motor
- The original instruction manual, if you still have it
Having both the brand and model number makes it much easier to find a compatible replacement garage door remote.

What If You Still Can’t Find It?
A lot of these garage systems were built to last for years, so sometimes, the labels have faded, fallen off, or become difficult to read.
If you can't find a brand or model number, take clear photos of the motor (front, side, back panel) and send them to our team, who can help identify your system.
Why Identifying Your System Matters
It might be a bit of a nuisance, but taking a few minutes to identify your garage door opener can save a lot of time later. Not only does it ensure your new remote is compatible so you don’t have to return your order, but it also saves you the stress of trying in vain to programme a remote that can’t connect to your system.
